Tips and Tricks for Your New Email Account

With the change to a Google Apps server, there are a number of features you can now take advantage of. Here's just a few of the ones that I've found most useful:

1) Keep Track of Appointments:

Along with email, you now have access to a calendar where you can store and share your personal appointments.  Access the calendar at

You can create sub-calendars for specific purposes. (Such as the Eskimos calendar you see to the right.) Click the Add button in the calendar list on the left-hand side of the calendar page.

You can share your calendar with friends and family.  Go to Settings / Calendars and change the Sharing settings for the calendar you want to share.

Sync you calendar in Thunderbird, by installing Lightning and gCalSync.  For a good tutorial on how to do this, check out:

Important Changes Coming To Your Email!!!

If you have an email address @, there are some important changes coming to how your email works.  Read on for the details:

Email for will be moving to a Google Apps server.  Only the email server settings will be affected, this wonderful website and (most importantly) your email archives and email address will remain intact.

This change will allow users to take advantage of Google's spam filtering services, reducing the amount of clutter in your inbox and improving the overall quality of service.

NOW!  (Well, almost now.)  Your email is already being delivered to Google servers, and your new account is waiting for you.  You can continue to access your email (for now) at the old server address and on the old webmail system, but any changes you make *such as deleting a message or saving an important note* will not propagate across to the new system.

Within the next 48 hours, you will no longer be able to access your mail at the old server address and webmail will be moving to a Gmail interface.  Check below for instructions on how to set up your accounts.

What you have to do:
The changes required on your end are minimal.  In order to continue enjoying your email address, please update your email program to use the following settings:

If you use IMAP (recommended):

Account Name:   (be sure to include the '' part!)
Incoming Mail Server:
Outgoing Mail Server:

If you use POP:

Account Name:   (be sure to include the '' part!)
Incoming Mail Server:
Outgoing Mail Server:

Please note that you may need to log in and enable POP and/or IMAP for your account before these settings will work.  You can do this, by browsing to the new webmail interface. Once there, click on the "Email" link:

Then go to "Settings" and edit the POP/IMAP settings to enable access:

That's it!  You're all done, be sure to update your mail account settings now to make sure that you don't lose any changes you make...  If you run into problems, use the "contact us" link at the top of this page to get a hold of me, or give me a call at home.  Note that I have moved your old email to the new server.  If you think something is missing, please let me know and I'll do everything I can to retreive it!

2007 Family Reunion

Well, I suppose this isn't technically a story for theSmarts (given that this is actually a Knoll family reunion) but we're off in Parksville for a couple of weeks. Mom has been planning her family reunion for a little over a year now and the big day arrives tomorrow. So far we're the only ones here, but there is a whole gaggle of folks due to arrive beginning today and tomorrow.

We're staying at Mom and Dad's cabin at Beach Acres, which is where the reunion proper is actually being held.
The boys are enjoying the beach, and with a whole night of uninterrupted sleep last night, so are we. They have to share a room and the first night didn't go quite so well, but I think the lack of sleep caught up with them yesterday and things went a little better yesterday. I've also fired off about 150 photos so far, so you can see the highlights in the updated photo album.

Site update in progress...

Yowser!  If you haven't noticed that the site is currently undergoing some "minor" cosmetic changes, you're most likely reading this from a braille terminal.  I'm not yet convinced I like the new look, so it's likely to undergo some more changes before long...  Bear with me for a little while!  Once I'm done, I'll see about setting up the old theme as an option for anyone who would prefer that.

...Hello DreamHost

If you're reading this post, then the migration and DNS propagation are complete. is now hosted by

Everything seems to be working now, including the Gallery that got FUBAR'd by  After some further troubleshooting it looks like when I put my original ticket in to ShieldHost, they installed a new version of Gallery, but left either the database or the gallery data (or both) in the old format.  Rest assured that I will be making a complete backup shortly now that things are work properly again!

For those few of you who have an email address, note that there have been some changes to the way that the email server is configured.  I haven't yet had a chance to delve into the details, so you may experience some difficulty retrieving email over the next few days.  My apologies in advance, as I know this will be inconvenient.  I will work to rectify the email server ASAP!!!

I've confirmed that the email system is now functional.  However, due to the server configuration at, unless you use webmail, you will need to update your email client with a new log in name.  Please contact me directly for instructions on how to set up your email client.

Story submission by email

Authenticated users can now submit stories directly from email by sending their submissions to
"drupal at theSmarts dot ca". Note that for the submission to be successful, you must send the email from the account you used to register on this site.

eBay on RSS

I came across this afternoon, and for any of you who are committed eBay users, you might want to check it out. Bascially it will let you set up a customized search. which you can then receive via email or RSS here on Searches can be set to expire after a specific number of hours, or can run indefinitely. Once it's set up, you can't go back and change the parameters (as far as I can determine anyway), but it's fairly sim

Fix ups

There have been a number of error messages showing up in the logs lately. It appears that most of these are related to having migrated the photo albums. If you are having trouble getting to the photos, please check that you are using as the URL address. I have attempted to redirect the old "/albums" address, but can only redirect it for selected albums (hopefully most of them now) due to the way that apache and drupal handle url-rewrites. Finally, I've also re-set the permissions on the feedback page to allow anonymous users to send feedback. If you're still having troubles, you can contact me through the "Contact Us" link above... Hope this solves most of the problems! Sorry for the inconveniences.

All New!

After some considerable pain and frustration, is now powered by Drupal instead of geeklog. The new engine under the hood should be fairly transparent to most people, but provides for somewhat simpler customization and modifications. I haven't yet migrated the Gallery Pages, but plan on doing so in the near future... I seem to have run into some glitches in the import process, so please bear with me until this gets fixed. SOON! I promise!

Let me know what you think of the new digs!
